APRM on the Verge of Transformation: the AU Assembly Decision to Expand the APRM Mandate
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - At its 28th Summit held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 30 - 31 January 2017, the African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government decided to extend the mandate of the APRM to include tracking of the implementation and oversee monitoring and evaluation of the Continent’s key governance areas. The Assembly took this decision on the recommendation of H.E. Mr. Paul Kagame, President of the Republic of Rwanda, and his High Level Team of Experts who submitted the Report on “The Imperative to Strengthen our Union: Proposed Recommendations for the Institutional Reform of the African Union.”
In another decision, the AU Assembly welcomed the resolution to reposition the APRM to play a monitoring and evaluation role for the African Union Agenda 2063 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030.
The importance of the responsibility assigned to the APRM is a reflection of the confidence bestowed on the Mechanism. Welcoming this significant expansion in the mandate of the
APRM, Professor Eddy Maloka, CEO of the APRM Secretariat observed: “We are ready to take on this new exciting role. We are encouraged by the confidence the AU Assembly has on the APRM in entrusting us with such an important task.” The CEO concluded with a “pledge to execute the expanded mandate with utmost dedication and commitment”.

Since its establishment, the APRM has been at the forefront of the good governance movement in the continent, conducting country reviews, identifying strengths to share and deficiencies to rectify and developing ways and means by which to fill identified capacitybuilding needs to foster policies, standards and practices that lead to political stability, high economic growth, sustainable development and accelerated sub-regional and continental economic integration.
